A solid-state laser layout uses a 4.4 × 5 mm active area for end pumping using an uncooled multicolor laser-diode array (top). The resulting Nd:YAG laser has been incorporated into a so-called Ultra Lightweight Designator assembly that can operate over a temperature range of 100ºC with no thermal control in a package that weighs less than 5 lb (bottom).
